Sweetgrass is found between bodies of salt and fresh water. It is generally difficult to locate because it blends in with normal grasses. On windy days, it is possible to smell the sweet aroma of this grass. The root ends of sweetgrass are a shade of purple. It is sacred to First Nations People across Canada. It is used in various ceremonies and is often woven into a braid. The smoke from the sweetgrass is used for smudging.

The sweetgrass ceremony signifies spiritual strength. Sweetgrass is a very important part of every ceremony that is conducted because the sweetgrass was given to us by Mother Earth. We consider this grass to be the Hair of Mother Earth. She offers us this to be used in our ceremonies. We should always remember that it was the Creator who gave us life. We must never forget that we are no better than the ground we walk upon, so when a man thinks himself better than the earth, he is sadly lost.

We have to connect with our environment and Mother Earth because that is where we get our nourishment and medicine. We burn sweetgrass to purify and cleanse ourselves. This is done so our ceremonies will be celebrated in a respectfull way. It is then that the Creator will acknowledge our prayers and grant us good health and happiness. We receive gifts such as sight, hearing, pure thoughts, smell, feeling, and our legs to carry us and give us motion. These are the tools which we need to survive.
